Checking in

I have made myself scarce here, it seems. But I have been busy, just nothing finished to show, except for two more friendship blocks for friends who are leaving our group and Singapore soon.

I've also sandwiched my bloom quilt and have started to quilt it. For the time being I'm just quilting the small squares.

I'm also in the middle of raw edge appliqueing (is that a word?) my fish quilt. Here's a little "teaser".

Other that that, we've  been to a quick visit to Beijing to see DD. It was lovely to be with her and meet her colleagues and friends. We got to visit her classroom. How strange to see her as a competent teacher where as in my heart she is still a second grader herself ;)!!! Here they are practicing a song for their end of year concert.

Unfortunately the weather was terrible and it rained cats and dogs most of the time we were there. The pollution was quite bad as well but nothing compared with what we found upon our return to Singapore. And it's become increasingly worst as this week went on. It's the same story every year - although this time is by far the worst - as the farmers in Indonesia clear large areas of forest by setting deliberate slash-and-burn fires, sending clouds of smoke into the atmosphere.

from my window this morning

For now I'm keeping my head down and out of the haze as much as possible, even though it seeps through the closed windows and through the AC and everything starts to smell like it's been in a smoke house.

Oh well, what to do lah (that's a Singaporean saying by the way)!
Cheers

Liebe Vreni,
Roswitha

Wow -- how sad about all the slash and burn and the effect it's having on your air quality. Does it only happen at this time of year -- do you have clear skies at other times? It's so interesting -- I love to see peeks of your world -- it's SO different from mine!

Pretty blocks, and beautiful appliqué! Now I understand what you're doing, and it looks like appli-quilting. Is it? So sorry about the smoke/smog in your area. Wow. That's pretty amazing. I can imagine that it's impossible to get away from it. Seems like it would make people sick! I hope it doesn't bother you.

Oh that dirty air! What a cute little class she has. Can't wait to see more of the fish quilt. I did a bullseye quilt leaving raw edges. A older gentleman saw it and wondered how come I hadn't finished it properly. We just gotta try everything that comes along.

It looks like you have been really busy. I think our sewing rooms are getting a lot of use at present, nothing like being forced to stay inside! At least you have something positive to show for it.

The air is really bad in Singapore! I haven't seen it this bad when we lived there. It looks like it is going to stay for some time.... It is good you have so many projects to keep you going while being forced to stay indoors for a long time!

That air would be terrible for an asthmatic! Love your newest friendship blocks!

Hallo Vreni,
Leonore

Loving your work but can't believe the pollution. Must be an amazing experience for your daughter to be teaching in China. The classroom looks pretty much like my classroom in Australia.
