Hitting the ground running!

After missing our connecting flight and an unplanned 24 hours in Doha, we are now home again. We had a lovely time in Switzerland over Christmas as well as a quick side trip to Malta with the kids. I was pleased to see how well mum had settled into her "assisted living home" and how happy she is there. I can't tell you what a huge relieve that is! It was a busy time with clearing some of mum's house, entertaining the whole family over Christmas and visiting with friends but somehow it was just enjoyable. And I loved to be in the fresh winter air, although there was no snow, at least not where we were.

When I got home I had exactly one day to prepare for the Kaffe Fassett lecture and workshop I had signed up for. Both were very interesting, although my jet lagged brain was pushed to its limits!

The quilt we were working on is from his book Quilt Grandeur and is called Shadow Pinwheel. This is the original from the book

And this is my version. I wanted it to be completely different and since I had planned to make a blue and brown quilt for a while, I thought this would be the ideal opportunity. Not as easy as you might think to work while Kaffe and Brandon were "breathing down our necks"!

Here's what Kaffe hat to say to my design attempt:

And a few more examples from my class mates:

Now it's back to my sewing room. Although I had brought lots of hand sewing I didn't make one stitch while I was away. And I had such good intentions.

Cheers

Dein neues Projekt ist sehr schön, sehr harmonisch, wie der Kursleiter sagt "elegant".

Great little video! It is very elegant looking too!
Kaffe is coming to a Brisbane patchwork shop next month but the dates don't work for me :( next time hopefully.

Not for nuttin', honey, but I like yours best! And not just because we're "friends" either! Oh, how I would love to have Kaffe Fassett breathing down my neck with inspiration - maybe someday I'll get to meet him!

Sometimes you just have to leave the stitching at home. I'm sure it was all worth it to have the time to reconnect with family and friends!

As for your Kaffe class -- how fun! (If not a little stressful!) I LOVE your brown and blue -- they're so pretty!

Wow, Vreni, I am extremely jealous! Not just the blocks you made with those drooling gorgeous fabrics, but to be able to get feedback from the master Himself. Good on you, and really happy for you, hope you enjoyed your time at the workshop!

I think your colours really worked well together. Each block stood out. I would never have expected them to be so happy but they are!. Great that you didn't just use his fabrics and copy. Much more original. He is hard to work with. Everything is done really fast but it's great because in the end you have lots to take home. Looking forward to seeing more.

I love Kaffe fabrics but I've always been a little intimidated by all the color and movement. Yours is beautiful. So glad your Mom is doing so well in her new place and that you had such a great Christmas visit with everyone.

How fun to take a class from Kaffe. I think I would be too intimidated to accomplish anything!

How great to have that video! How did you find the class overall? The guys are over this part of the world teaching the same quilt. I love your version and I love that you didn't use all Westminster fabrics.

I think your quilt looks great - the blue/brown combo is a lovely change!! I really try to mix it all up in regard to different designer ranges, it really creates a much more interesting "patchworky" look!!

So I landed on Kaffe saying, "quite elegant," as I hope you did too! Your quilt is lovely, Vreni, and something different. Colors I wouldn't have thought to put together. So glad you could take such a class from a respected quilter, though I can sure imagine that 'hot breath on my neck" too! By now you're recovered from your jet lag and are still "running." I hope everything is well with you.
