Another Baby Quilt

Recently our nephew and his partner welcomed their second child into the family; a little girl this time. Since I made a quilt for their first child of course I made one for this one as well. You might remember this quilt I made for their little boy.

I started with making Gingham for the background as that's something I always wanted to try. But I didn't want to leave it as that, as a baby quilt needs colour, at least in my book.

The idea was to just randomly place flowers and butterflies all over but then I decided to go the "Kellie of Don't Look Now fame" way and make it into a tree. I've made Kellie's tree before, you can see it here and it's still one of my all time favourites.  I didn't use a pattern this time though, just cut out flowers, leaves, bugs and butterflies and fused them to the background.

The shapes were then raw edge appliquéd onto the background and the batting and I added the backing before I started the free motion quilting.

I'm happy with how the quilt turned out but my blasted machine gave me grief again. I must think of other options, otherwise I'll end up throwing this machine out of the window one of these days ;)!!!

Last week we delivered the quilt in person (in the Netherlands) and we got to meet the newest member of the family as well as her little brother, who was born when we were still living in Singapore.

Peak Hour is finished

and just in time as my son is leaving for Europe in a few days and will be able to bring it personally and meet the newest member of the family.

The pattern is by Kellie Wulfsohn of Don't Look Now fame! I made it a bit smaller though and added a couple of my own vehicles like the animal truck and the bus.

The backing is from Kellie's fabric line "Peak Hour" by Riley Blake. I used the method of raw edge applique  through all layers of the quilt so all the stitching is clearly visible on the back.

To make it easy on myself, I just stipple quilted it.

I also finished this little wall hanging I started at the beginning of time (or that's how it feels). It just needed the binding, so it was done in a few minutes.  When I was young, I used to make Scherenschnitte and I wanted to see if it works with fabric too. The tree is cut in one piece, just as you would with paper.

Happy Sunday.

A bit sad!

Today I'm feeling a bit despondent. The reason is that once again I'm loosing a good friend, meaning she is leaving Singapore to return home after being here for 14 years. We first met at a quilt group meeting many years ago and have become close.  I will miss her greatly as well as our weekly get-togethers when we quilted and crafted. Of course I couldn't let her leave without making her a little something.

It's part of a new pattern set for four cushion covers called "From the Heart" by Kellie from Don't look Now but I've made it into a little wall hanging instead.

As most of Kellie's patterns it's done by raw edge applique and it came together quite fast.

On Friday  I had another tea box workshop and both ladies managed to finish a box each. Didn't they turn out lovely?
That's all for now. I hope to be back soon.
